Farming In the harvesting months, being July and August, the whole family is busy mowing the grass, piling up the heaps and bringing in the hay. The two horses, Tonhil and Tunsjella, are a big help. They pull the mower, and turn the grass with old farming equipment. After mowing, it's waiting for a few weeks of sunshine. The grass has to dry before it can be stored in the barn. To let the drying process go faster, the grass is piled up in a long heap and held together with long wooden sticks, so the wind can blow through it. After the drying process the hay is transported into the barn. A good spring with lots of new grass followed by a dry summer will thus provide enough food for the horses to get through the long and cold Norwegian winter. |
